DNS refers to the “domain name service”. Every hosting company and Internet access provider on the Internet provides DNS service for their customers.
DNS is the translation service between friendly Internet names like “www.infolog.ca” and the ugly Internet protocol addresses that Internet servers understand (such as 67.213.69.88).
Most of the time this transaction happens transparently for users of the Internet. In fact every time you call up your favorite web site there are DNS transactions that happen in the background.
